in disk management it says that it is Removable, 7.87Gb read Only, and it shows the primary partition is 7.87 GB RAW, Healthy (Active, Primary Partition). I am running a Sony VAIO. I do happen to have a dead drive and if I plug a thumb drive or nano into it, nothing happens.

thanks for saving my life, my usb drive packed with 3 months of college work on it & i've rescued it & now learnt to copy it & back it up. The disks in question are all Seagate Externals. I followed your suggestions, but they still didn't show up. To do this, right-click the removable drive’s partition, select Change Drive Letter and Paths, and add a drive letter.
