Computer Won't Recognize External Hard Drive


I had a 1 TB external that's been giving me problems for months j was just about to write it off as ruined. I have a lot of important files on that drive. The next thing I know is that when I plug the USB in my desktop, it didn't show the drive in my computer anymore.

All the tests I did with 'Data Life Guard' gave me a tick for good health. It showed the the new hard drive below those as Disk 1 and Unallocated. however the onboard USB is old and a few crashed. No problems with WindowsXP or earlier versions of Windows - - - therefore VISTA seems unable to operate USB removable media - and not yet sure if SanDisk or other memory
