Switching the LAN cable from one port to a different port did the trick. This is just another stupid Microsoft thing. I had a virus (snapdo) which I hope has been eliminated using Malwarebytes and other virus cleaners. Once I discovered that, I ran the built-in diagnostic test and it was reported that there was problem with the DNS failing to respond. This happened suddenly after I ran new antivirus packages (Panda and then Symantecs) to remove the "Dupator" virus that was in 240 places on my Windows ME machine.
