I agree we should replace the link to the outdated "Harden your Mac against malware attacks" article with something more current ... When blocking a pop-up, Firefox displays an information bar (if it hasn’t been previously dismissed –see below), as well as an icon in the location bar. Close the about:preferences page. Opera blocks them so I don't understand why Firefox won't or can't.
