I noticed that it wasn't set up to act on threats so I went into all the settings and reset to "recommended settings" (not sure how they got mixed up...i just This discovered this was all due to the Rootkit.Win32.TDSS and thus cleaned it out. It's not a malware removal tool. TDSSKiller did not solve the problem. To prevent this, always read through the update notification carefully. Like you, I haven't used SpyBot for years - and would never have thought to try it.
